Hydro-Québec publishes Sustainability Report 2014

Body

Hydro-Québec is one of the leading electric utilities in North America and ranks among the world's largest hydropower producers.

Key 2014 achievements highlighted in the Sustainability Report 2014:

  • 99% of the electricity generated by Hydro-Québec was from renewable sources. In Québec, the electricity industry represents 0.4% of total GHG emissions (12% in Canada).
  • Net power sales outside Québec replaced thermal output, preventing 6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, the equivalent of the annual emissions produced by 1.6 million vehicles.
  • Energy efficiency: a cumulative total of 8.2 TWh in energy savings compared with 2003 consumption was achieved. That's the equivalent of the consumption of 500,000 households.
  • Construction continued on the $6.5 billion Romaine hydropower complex, the third largest infrastructure project in Canada. Environmental follow-up will continue until 2040.
  • Continued rollout of Canada's first electric vehicle public charging network. By year-end, the Electric Circuit had 358 charging stations installed in partners' parking lots, covering almost every region of the province.
  • Hydro-Québec's share of the Québec economy is around 4% of the gross domestic product (GDP).
  • Its community investments totaled $30 million.

Hydro-Québec's 13th Sustainability Report draws on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 guidelines and Electric Utilities Sector Supplement, based on the "core" compliance option. Moreover, an external firm independently validated the company's reported application of GRI G4 guidelines and AA1000 APS principles. The external firm also reviewed most of the data.
