Barclays has released its 2008 Corporate Sustainability Report which is focused on sustainability performance, with reporting centred around five strategic themes.

Barclays Group Chief Executive John Varley states, "The financial and economic uncertainty of 2008 was profound. At a time when it has never been more important for banks to focus on the things that support their sustainability agenda, we have never faced so many distractions from doing so.”

The 2008 Report includes:

Independent materiality analysis
Overview of 2008 including a discussion of the role of banks in society
Discussion of the challenges the financial services sector faced in 2008 and Barclays commitments for 2009
Detailed performance against the five strategic themes: customers and clients, inclusive banking, environment, diversity and our people, and responsible global citizenship
Economic impact analysis across the business
External assurance from Corporate Citizenship Company and SGS (carbon emissions)
Reporting against the Global Reporting Initiative framework G3 to B+ application level.
