The world’s first sustainability-certified sugarcane has been purchased by Coca Cola.

The Bonsucro certification system, an industry initiative developed over the past five years,  has been used for the first time, certifying the production of sugarcane at a mill owned by the Raizen company in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Over 130,000 tonnes of sugar and 63,000 cubic metres of ethanol were certified against the Bonsucro’s production standard, which assesses the biodiversity, ecosystem and human rights impacts of sugarcane production.
