The UK government has requested that certain legal references be removed from the draft United Nations guidelines on business and human rights. In a response to the draft principles for the ‘Protect, Respect and Remedy’ framework of John Ruggie, the UN special representative on business and human rights, the UK Foreign Office expresses concerns that legal analyses in the draft document would be incompatible with European Union and UK law, and worries that some requirements are too prescriptive. Ruggie will present his final report on the framework to the UN Human Rights Council this summer.
