The oil firm Trafigura has been convicted of criminal charges and fined $1million (£640,000, €780,000) in the Netherlands for toxic dumping on the west coast of Africa. The UK-based company had illegally exported oil treatment waste products to the Ivory Coast, killing 15 people and hospitalizing 69. Trafigura was also convicted of concealing how dangerous the waste was. One Trafigura employee was fined $25,000 and given a six-month suspended sentence for his role. The company has already paid $45m in a deal with victims. The Dutch prosecution is appealing against the judgment, claiming the fine is too low. Trafigura is also considering an appeal.
