Online game. See http://knowledge.allianz.com/ceo2/en.html

This free online game, developed by WWF and the insurance group Allianz, puts you in the seat of the chief executive of an organization in one of four industries – automotive, chemical, insurance or utility – with the task of increasing share price while simultaneously cutting carbon dioxide emissions over a 20-year period.

A portfolio presents you with industry-specific tasks that can be implemented, each with a cost as a percentage of your budget and with an estimated impact on your emissions. At a basic level you can use this information as a guide; for more data you can consult advisors representing the different stakeholder groups – investors, researchers, consumers, and environmentalists.

The result is both enjoyable and educational, giving an insight into the major challenges that will be faced by businesses in the coming years as well as some of the potential ‘green’ solutions. Success is by no means guaranteed, and is based upon your ability to predict future events and plan accordingly. But the message of the game is clear – that cutting emissions and increasing share price significantly is very possible.

Ultimately this is an educational simulation with fixed events and variable outcomes. Future events are not fixed, but the emphasis here is on education and fun, and it will be a valuable tool that should help players understand some of the challenges faced at executive level in this area.
