Four international clothes retailers have joined clothing company Gap in banning the use of Indian leather. (EP2, 2000)
US-based retailers, Liz Claiborne, the J.Crew Group, and the Florsheim Group, plus the UK-based shoe maker C&J Clark, made their decision after People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) had claimed some Indian exporters made leather under poor conditions. C&J Clark said: ‘We decided, after talks with PETA, that only a ban would make a full impact on the industry.’
