CSR activities and reporting are to be made obligatory for mining companies in India following new legislation drawn up after concerns about pollution and rebel violence.

A draft Mines and Minerals Act would enforce corporate responsibility programmes to provide employment and development for local communities and regulate the activities of mining firms according to environmental standards.

The government says the legislation will also be central to ‘conflict management and resolution’ in many areas, where violent insurgencies have followed a breakdown in trust between companies and local communities.

Industry experts say that poor regulation in India, the world’s fourth-largest iron ore produce, has given free rein to illegal mining which has lead to corruption, environmental damage and human rights abuses.
