A decision to create a UK ombudsman to protect supermarket suppliers from the power of large retailers has been praised by CSR proponents but criticized by the industry.
The government has accepted Competition Commission recommendations to form a body to monitor supermarket behaviour and enforce a groceries supply code of practice that comes into force this month.
The move has been welcomed by the Food Ethics Council but criticised by The British Retail Consortium. The exact nature and powers of the new ombudsman will be decided in a forthcoming consultation.
