Hanson has produced its first environment report.

The heavy building materials group, which is one of the largest in the world, outlines various indicators of its environmental performance in the 36-page document, which devotes four pages to its impact on local communities in Europe and the United States.

But it sets no targets for the group and has no verification statement.

Chief executive Andrew Dougal claimed the company had begun to make ‘good headway’ on environmental matters, but added: ‘We have a great deal of work to do, particularly to strengthen our data collection systems and to set targets for our future performance’.

The community impact section of the report shows complaints against Hanson about noise, dust, traffic and vibrations at its 651 sites all rose in 1999, although complaints about odours fell. Carbon dioxide emissions also rose slightly.

Hanson employs 17,000 people in ten countries and made profits of £316million before tax last year.
