Italian energy giant Eni is the latest company set to road-test human rights guidelines backed by the United Nations and the private sector arm of the World Bank.

Eni, which operates in 70 countries with approximately 80,000 employees, will try out the Guide to Human Rights Impact Assessment and Management (HRIA), published in draft form by the United Nations Global Compact, the International Business Leaders Forum and the International Finance Corporation in 2007. The company will provide feedback on how the guide’s eight-step methodology works alongside the company’s existing impact assessment regime and due diligence procedures.

Eni will also take part in the guide’s ‘integration process’, whereby it will try to incorporate human rights into its existing environmental and social impact assessments.

Adam Leach, IBLF’s chief executive, said: ‘Eni’s engagement is a clear signal that they are committed to improving their existing human rights due diligence efforts. We commend them for exploring our integration process and look forward to the opportunities for mutual learning that will undoubtedly arise.’
