Works by corporate responsibility gurus John Elkington, Simon Zadek and Anita Roddick have been voted among the top 50 ‘sustainability books’ of the past 60 years.
In books voted for by the global alumni network of Cambridge University’s Programme for Sustainability Leadership, studies by CSR thinkers are ranked alongside works by former US presidential candidates Ralph Nader and Al Gore, the climatologist James Lovelock and the anti-capitalist journalist Naomi Klein.
Elkington’s 1997 Cannibals with Forks, Zadek’s The Civil Corporation (2001), and Jonathon Porritt’s Capitalism as if the World Matters (2005) all made the top 50.
Others in the list are CK Prahalad’s ground-breaking 2004 pro-poor study, The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid, and Capitalism at the Crossroads, Stuart Hart’s 2005 look into ‘the unlimited business opportunities in solving the world’s most difficult problems’.
The list, along with interviews with the authors, has been incorporated into a book published by the Cambridge programme and written by Wayne Visser, founder of the think tank CSR International.
