A multinational healthcare company has saved a billion gallons of water annually since introducing a programme to reduce water use five years ago.

US-based Abbott says it has reached its main target – of a 40 per cent cut in manufacturing water use in relation to sales – two years ahead of schedule. It has also achieved a seven per cent cut in absolute terms.

Abbott has reduced water consumption especially in areas of scarcity – by 11 per cent in Arizona’s drought-stricken Casa Grande and 14 per cent in Campoverde, Italy, since 2007.
