Ports sector needs to do more

UK ports are making 'significant inroads' in complying with environmental legislation but still do too little to prioritize the issue, says a new survey of the sector.

The Green Ports survey, by the research consultancy ICM, suggests that port companies aim to place more emphasis on implementing environmental strategies during the next year. At present 81 per cent of UK ports intend to train employees to improve their environmental skills in the coming months.

The engineering consultancy Royal Haskoning, which commissioned the report, said the results were encouraging but showed a worrying minority of port companies lagging behind.

Richard Marks, an engineer at Royal Haskoning's maritime division, said: 'UK ports are steadily recognizing the need to implement environmental strategies, and it is encouraging to see that so many recognize that they still have a long way to go in terms of doing enough.

'But there is still a sizeable number that are failing to take any action at all, with almost one in ten ports not planning to do anything in the next 12 months or unsure of what they should be doing.'
