Kraft Foods has become the latest company to certify a chocolate product under the Rainforest Alliance seal.
The Swiss multinational has agreed to buy 30,000 tons of sustainable cocoa beans from the Ivory Coast by the end of 2012, with its Cote d’Or dark chocolate range the first to be certified.
Beginning in France and Belgium, the firm will introduce the certified Cote d’Or throughout Europe and in Canada and the US.
Although the firm claims the products to be ‘the first mainstream chocolate products in Europe to carry the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal’, US-based confectioner Mars signed its Galaxy chocolate up to the scheme earlier this year.
