France Telecom has halted it corporate restructuring programme after a spate of suicides at the company and the resignation of its deputy chief executive.
The company’s reorganization measures, which unions say have created poor working conditions and insecurity, have been blamed for the deaths of 25 staff at the firm, and have now been put on hold until the end of the year.
Amid calls for the resignation of France Telecom managers from trade unions, the company’s number two, Louis-Pierre Wene,s has resigned in what the French government, which owns part of the firm, called ‘a very important move’.
Both developments follow the 25th suicide since the beginning of 2008. Jean-Paul Rouanet, a 51-year-old father-of-two jumped off a bridge after leaving a note blaming stress at work.
Chief executive Didier Lombard has said he has no plans to step down.
