US automobile companies will be forced to produce cleaner and more efficient cars under new government proposals.

Fuel efficiency standards will raise the average miles per gallon for new cars and trucks to 35.5 per fleet by 2016.

The government claims this will save 1.8 billion barrels of oil yearly, and is the equivalent of taking 42 million cars off the road. It estimates that the new standards would cost up to $1300 (£795) a car, an amount that would be covered by better gas mileage.

President Obama, who has been responsible for many state bail-outs of car companies, said: ‘This action will give our auto companies some long overdue clarity, stability and predictability.’

Foreign manufacturers selling cars in the US will not have to meet the standard.

The regulations are to be finalized by next March.
