Two cocoa producing farmer co-operatives in the Ivory Coast have become the first to be certified under a cocoa sustainability programme created by UTZ Certified, a Dutch body that also runs ethical certification schemes for tea and coffee producers.
Co-operative Agricole de Fiedifoue and Coopaga received their certificates after working with the multinational food company Cargill and Solidaridad, a Dutch fair trade organization.
The first UTZ Certified sustainable cocoa will be available to consumers by the end of this year.
