The telecommunications sector has been warned that it is running risks by publishing so little on CSR issues.

Research by Covalence says telecoms companies provide a small volume of ethical information, despite being increasingly exposed to social and environmental controversies.

The sector is ranked 14th out of 18 for its level of CSR information under Covalence’s ethical quotation system. The report says that, though telecoms do not generate as much debate as automobile or food companies, they will face challenges as they continue to expand.

Problem areas are expected to be product access among low-income populations, anti-corruption policy, and supply chain management. Furthermore, downsizing in today’s economic climate is affecting working conditions and job stability in the industry.

Covalence also ranked individual companies using data from 2002 to the present day. Vodafone, Verizon and Telefonica were the top three, and Telecom Italia was deemed to have the worst CSR performance.
