A project to establish health watchdogs near uranium mining sites has been started by the French mining group Areva. An agreement between the company, non-governmental organization Sherpa and medical charity Medecins du Monde will set up multi-party ‘health watch’ groups in France and other countries to study the potential impact of mining activities on the health of those living nearby.
