EP: from humble past to news-filled present

In this ‘basement’ slot of Ethical Performance ten years ago, the late Alistair Townley set out his aims as EP’s publisher.

That first issue, May 1999, promised impartial and in-depth coverage of what companies are doing to improve and manage their ethical performance, and to report on how investing institutions are trying to support the corporate responsibility agenda.

In this 10th birthday issue, and beyond, that simple aim continues.  To be honest, the job is a lot easier these days, as there is so much going on in the field. Back in 1999 it was sometimes a struggle to find enough stories to fill the newsletter. Now the communications come in thick and fast from all channels, and the difficulty is in deciding what to leave out rather that what to put in.

To celebrate a decade of filling up these news pages we have produced, with this issue, a celebratory supplement for subscribers that contains archived material, comment, and some analysis of the headlines we have covered.

We hope you enjoy the glance back, and that you will also look forward with us to the next decade.
