British gaming firms are to be forced to contribute funding for gambling helplines and treatment centres. A statutory levy will be imposed on companies from 1 April with the aim of raising more than £5million ($7.3m) a year – unless the industry can give ‘satisfactory funding guarantees’ before then. UK sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe said voluntary arrangements with gambling operators had not raised an ‘acceptable amount’. Some companies contributed nothing.
