Yahoo, the internet provider that has been attacked for its indirect role in human rights abuses in China, has established a fund to offer legal and other support to government censorship victims.
The company, accused of complicity in the jailing and torture of Chinese dissidents by handing over details of their online activity, was more recently criticized again because Yahoo China, in which it has a stake, published a list of rioters wanted for their involvement in violent protests in Tibet.
Human rights groups are taking the new fund seriously, not least because it is being overseen by Harry Wu, a veteran activist, former prisoner of conscience and probably China’s most famous political dissident.
The Yahoo chief executive Jerry Yang, who was once called before the US foreign affairs committee over criticisms of the company’s ethical record, said: ‘We are committed to making sure our actions match our values around the world. At Yahoo we believe in the transforming power of the internet. That’s why we are so committed to working to support free expression and privacy around the world.’
In particular, Yahoo is to provide financial, humanitarian and legal support to the families of Shi Tao and Wang Xiaoning, two dissidents who were jailed for expressing anti-government opinions online.
