Draft ethical standards for artisanal diamond mining in Sierra Leone will be published next month by the Diamond Development Initiative, an umbrella group of non-governmental organizations, trade unionists and industry representatives, including from De Beers. Large companies have generally struggled to control the working conditions of the artisanal miners – small-scale producers operating largely without machinery, of whom there are thought to be about a million in Africa.
