BT has won the prestigious Impact on Society award in the 2007 Business in the Community (Bitc) Awards for Excellence. It is only the second business to have received the award twice, after Marks & Spencer managed the feat last year.

The FTSE 100 company, which first won the award in 1999, was praised for the ‘extraordinary achievements’ made through its support of the ChildLine helpline on child abuse, work to provide support for the worldwide Disasters Emergency Committee, and a ‘comprehensive’ ethical supply chain programme. Julia Cleverdon, Bitc’s chief executive, described the telecoms company as ‘a shining example of what companies of all sizes can achieve’.

RWE npower was highly commended in the same category, and Marks & Spencer’s chief executive, Stuart Rose, won the Leadership award for his ‘commitment to responsible business’.

Other companies taking honours were Barclays, for environmental leadership, British Sky Broadcasting, which won the Climate Change Award, and AstraZeneca, which took the Healthy Workplace Award.
