Fundraisers in the not-for-profit sector who set up corporate partnerships are to be taken on site visits to two European clothes companies this autumn so they can gain a greater understanding of corporate social responsibility.
The visits to Levi Strauss and Kuyichi Europe are being arranged by Zoltan Valcsicsak, senior manager of community affairs at Levi Strauss Europe, and Tony Myers, a fundraiser at the University of Calgary.
‘There’s still a huge gulf between how companies practise CSR and how non-profits think they practise it,’ said Valcsicsak. ‘Fundraisers need to see the world from the corporate perspective, and by going on to the shop floor they will be able to see what really drives a company’s CSR policy and how its philanthropic programme fits into the bigger picture of corporate citizenship.’
Three years ago a Smart Company study found that corporate partnerships were being hampered by a ‘gulf of cynicism and misunderstanding’, with not-for-profits largely unaware of companies’ needs (EP6, issue 6).
The visits are being organized by the Resource Alliance, a not-for-profit network, as part of a one-and-a-half-day session on CSR – the first of its kind – at the International Fundraising Congress in the Netherlands in October.
