Grants worth Aus$1.8million (£723,000) over three years have been announced by the Telstra Foundation, a children’s aid group set up by the Australian telecoms company Telstra.

The money will benefit isolated children and young people in Australia by funding support networks and improving access to services including education and healthcare.

There will be seven projects, all financed by the foundation’s community development fund.

Herb Elliott, the foundation’s chairman, said: ‘It is very concerning that so many kids who don’t have access to social networks or opportunities to contribute in their community are suffering depression, poor self-esteem and ill health.’
