Central European small businesses are to be encouraged to become more socially responsible through a new programme funded by the technology company Hewlett-Packard.

HP has created the Central European Supplier Responsibility project with the Copenhagen Centre to give small- and medium-sized enterprises ‘the management tools needed to operate their businesses in a socially and environmentally sustainable manner’.

The 18-month project will train 20 HP suppliers in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland, supported by a European Commission grant.

Bonnie Nixon Gardiner, HP’s programme manager for supply chain social and environmental responsibility, said suppliers would be educated on ‘how socially responsible management practices will actually improve, not take away from, their bottom line.’ Rapid economic growth in Central Europe had ‘often outpaced managerial knowledge’ in this area, she added.

The participants, among them suppliers of packaging components, plastic and sheet metal parts, will receive training and advice on management systems and occupational health and safety. The Copenhagen Centre will oversee training sessions and participants will be invited to workshops to share what they have learnt with other suppliers.

When the programme ends, the Copenhagen Centre will develop guidelines for similar projects in other industries. HP may then extend the work to China and Latin America.
