More than 50 wood products buyers, suppliers and policymakers are to produce practical guidance for businesses dealing with companies in Indonesia, Malaysia and several African countries.

At a seminar hosted by the EU Timber Trade Action Plan they discussed ways of making sure that European buyers, trade associations and governments bought only legal timber. Speakers at the meeting included representatives from Indonesia, Malaysia and Cameroon.

Delegates were told they minimized the risk of buying illegal timber if they established relationships with suppliers so that they knew the source of the products.

The principles when drawn up will also apply soon to China, Bolivia, Brazil and Guyana.
