Eight of the world's largest electric utility companies have released an 'agenda for concerted action' on greenhouse gas emissions.

The eight companies, representing about a tenth of the planet's generating capacity, call for greater use of energy efficiency measures and a wider debate on the use of incentives for low-carbon technologies.

The companies, brought together under the World Business Council for Sustainable Development's Electricity Utilities Sector Project, are ABB (Switzerland), CLP Holdings (Hong Kong), EDF Group (France), Entergy Corporation (US), Eskom Holdings (South Africa), Kansai Electric Power Company, Tokyo Electric Power Company (both Japan), and Suez (France).

Norwegian maritime services group Wilhelmsen and energy company Pacific Gas & Electric, from the US, have formed the Global Leadership and Technology Exchange with two Scandinavian consultancies, Det Norske Veritas and Xynteo.

They will share ideas on how to cut energy costs and reduce emissions.
