The Asian Development Bank is to conduct a study of its energy policy to promote more use of clean energy in Asia and the Pacific area to help to preserve energy supplies.

The study, backed by a $1million (£530,000) technical assistance grant, will look at a range of subjects, including environmental risks and incentives to promote private-sector participation, and the expansion of  the role of renewable energy, energy efficiency and demand side management.

The International Energy Agency's figures show that Asia's annual energy consumption is equivalent to more than 2100 billion tons of oil and is expected to more than double by 2025. In view of this the bank also intends to develop a strategy to guide energy sector operations for the next five years.
