Olympus Group, the Japanese precision instrument maker, has brought in a procurement policy that will favour suppliers that show they take account of their impacts on human rights, labour standards and the environment, as well as meeting quality, price and delivery requirements.

The move is allied to the launch of a new group 'corporate philosophy' that goes under the headline of 'Social IN', guiding all aspects of Olympus's business activities. Social IN stands for 'INvolvement,' meaning the company must participate as a valued member of society, 'INsight,' meaning the sharing of new ideas, and 'INspiration,' meaning the creation of new values. To guide its CSR activities, Olympus has also adopted a Corporate Conduct Charter and Code of Conduct.

The new Olympus policy is part of the group's efforts to follow the ten human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption principles to which it committed itself when it signed up to the United Nations Global Compact in 2004.
