Banco Real has become the first company to use an online tutorial package to introduce corporate responsibility to all employees.
The Brazilian bank, an ABN Amro subsidiary, has required all its 28,000 staff to use the Chronos package, developed by the University of Cambridge’s Programme for Industry and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. ABN Amro itself has also signed up to use Chronos, though not on a mandatory basis for staff.
The three-hour tutorial package introduces the business case for sustainable development ‘in straightforward terms’, using video clips and interactive sessions such as role playing and quizzes. It can be accessed either online or from a CD-Rom.
Almost 200 companies, including Philips Electronics and Shell, now use the training tool, which is customized for individual businesses according to their sector. However, Banco Real’s use of the package for its entire workforce is a first for Chronos, which is usually offered to staff in environmental roles, senior decision-makers and new employees. Banco Real felt compulsory use of the package would help it integrate responsible business practices throughout the company.
Sheila von Rimscha, who manages Chronos, said 200,000 employees at various companies have now used Chronos, and that Banco Real was the first company in Brazil to begin using the package, which is now available in Portuguese and Spanish.
The university group has just produced a version for school governors and head teachers that will help them to decide how to apply the principles in managing schools.
