Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has introduced a whistleblower policy inviting employees to report corruption, abuses of power, security risks and other bad practices to an independent committee.

Idris Jala, the airline’s new managing director, told employees: ‘This policy is being introduced to provide a safe and acceptable way for you to raise your concerns about malpractice affecting MAS without fear or repercussions. It allows you to raise matters in an independent and unbiased manner.’

Jala said employees would not be asked to prove their allegations and warned: ‘Any attempt to retaliate against, victimize or intimidate a whistleblower making a good-faith report is a serious violation and shall be dealt with by way of disciplinary action.’

Jala, whose circular to employees was leaked to local newspapers, was appointed in December 2005 to return the loss-making airline to profit.
