Guidance on how to open, run and close mines in a socially responsible manner has been published by the International Council on Mining and Metals, along with good practice case studies. The 17 recommended steps include initial identification of stakeholder groups, gathering data on the social and economic conditions of people living nearby, and setting up community action plans. The council has produced the guidance in collaboration with the World Bank.
