Levi Strauss has granted $10,000 (£5700) to Cambodia's Arbitration Council Foundation to fund its work in resolving collective labour disputes.

Since it was jointly set up by the Cambodian government, trade unions and employers' groups in 2003, the council has heard more than 200 cases, 90 per cent of which have come from the garment sector. More than two-thirds have been resolved.

Sharon Tan, corporate affairs director of the Levis Strauss Asia Pacific division, said: 'Our hope is that contractors will have in place effective mechanisms to speedily and effectively resolve labour disputes to the mutual benefit of all parties concerned. In instances where this is not possible, such contractors as well as other manufacturers in Cambodia will be able to avail themselves of the Arbitration Council's services.'
