Sustainability performance by business has been estimated to have fallen by 19 per cent in Japan since 1990. The environmental organization Japan for Sustainability (JFS) analysed more than 200 data sets to produce a score of 33.5 points against a hypothetical projected figure of 100 for the year 2050. The score in 1990 was 41.3.

JFL said: 'Some say, as a whole, that the level of activities in this field could be among the most advanced in the world. Yet regrettably, these positive endeavours are not strong enough to reverse the trends of global warming, environmental destruction and pollution, which steadily continue with no apparent end in sight.'

The researchers say they want to draw an overall picture of sustainability in Japan to raise public awareness.

One way JFS hopes to improve awareness is with its newly created website aimed at encouraging children worldwide to understand environmental issues and to think and act independently. The website gives the environmental view on such topics as water, trees and food.
