Guidelines giving a comprehensive introduction to sustainability reporting have been issued by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants Malaysia – because companies in this country need to adopt the practice ‘to go beyond compliance to corporate governance’.

Tay Kay Luan, head of Acca Malaysia, said this would not only show transparency and accountability but would also give an advantage to companies competing internationally. However, he added: ‘You have to communicate what you are doing. Without communications, your stakeholders will not be aware of your work and this will make it difficult to gain trust or get “licence to operate”.’

The guidelines are endorsed by the Malaysian government and securities commission.
