An initiative has been started to help Bangladesh to develop its textile and garment sector as a competitive, profitable and responsible industry now that quotas have gone with the end of the international Agreement on Textiles and Clothing.

The project is a joint effort by the United Nations Development Programme and the MFA Forum, a network of companies, trade unions, non-governmental organizations and multilateral institutions. The forum was set up last year to advise and guide countries whose garment industries could be damaged by open competition and the uncertainty that has arisen since the quotas ended.

The UN body is already drawing up a plan for the Bangladesh industry with the country’s commerce ministry, supported by private sector and other community groups, trade unions, service providers and NGOs. However, the buyers, which are important stakeholders, were missing from the list and the forum has offered to introduce them into the operation.

The forum hopes to help Bangladesh to build a competitive garment industry that also has regard for workers’ rights.
