IT companies go family friendly

Three Japanese information technology companies have introduced policies to make it easier for employees to work while raising a family, just as the government has brought in legislation to stem the rapidly falling birth rate.

From July NEC Corp, which has just become a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, will pay relocation expenses to employees who have to move in with or nearer to parents to share childcare, or who move to an area where child day care is available for longer hours. If an employee uses a family support centre run by the local authority, the company will pay half the costs, usually about ¥300 ($2.80, £1.50) an hour. NEC will also support telecommuting employees by providing at no charge a laptop computer and a broadband internet connection.

Since April, Sony Corp has allowed all employees caring for children to telecommute full-time, and Fujitsu has extended childcare leave from a year to 18 months.

These decisions coincide with a new law obliging companies to have policies that support employees who care for their children.
