A programme has been set up by the Development Bank of the Philippines to support and encourage the forestation of open and denuded areas through by establishing high-value fruit trees and other useful plants.
The bank will use its acquired assets in various parts of the country and will establish a fund to finance the programme. It hopes to recruit state universities and colleges, local councils and other organizations as programme partners and will work with government agencies.
The planting seeks to protect coastal areas, improve spawning grounds for aquatic life, conserve soil and water in the uplands, and develop rural industries. The bank expects that every reforested hectare will ultimately result in an extra ton of fish caught.
