A new standard has been established for the Chinese textile industry, the country's first socially responsible auditing benchmark for the sector. The areas covered by the standard, drawn up by the China National Textile and Apparel Council, include CSR, stakeholder involvement, trade union rights and child and forced labour.
The CSC9000T standard is intended to guarantee employees' benefits and health and safety measures. The council believes the standard is particularly important for the industry in China because textile and apparel companies have a high turnover, making a well-documented social responsibility management system necessary, and most employ migrant workers, who often have no signed job contract.
More than 160 companies and associations have agreed to promote the standard. A website will be set up to give information on the standard.
