Jamshedpur, a city of 600,000 people in the Indian state of Bihar, has signed up to the United Nations Global Compact Pilot Cities Program, which brings the private and public sectors together to address urban problems.
At present Jamshedpur is forming a committee and deciding on a pilot project. Already the city has experienced co-operation between authority and the private sector. Tata, a 91-company conglomerate, which helped to develop Jamshedpur, now plays a part in the city government.
Another Indian city, Pune, formerly Poona, in Maharashtra, is also interested in joining the program.
The other cities in the program are Melbourne in Australia, Bath (UK), Nuremburg (Germany), Porto Alegre (Brazil) and San Francisco (US).
