More detailed and specific evidence of ethical practice has been demanded in questions to companies participating in Australia’s second Corporate Responsibility Index. The scoring system has also been adjusted to give much more importance to performance and impact.

The aim has been to reflect companies’ actions rather than just their planning, said the St James Ethics Centre, one of the organizers of the index. More changes of this kind can be expected as the index evolves, saids Dr Simon Longstaff, the centre’s executive director.

The organizers decided to bring forward the second annual index by six months so that it coincided with reports from other countries, such as the UK, that use the index.

Seven companies completed the index for the first time, raising the number of participants to 27. The list was topped by the Westpac Banking Corporation, which also led the UK index.
