Pfizer, the international pharmaceuticals company, has donated $11million (£5.85m) to relief organizations and has provided medicines and other health products valued at $46m in the tsunami-hit regions of the Far East.

In particular, the company has pledged more than $600,000 to set up a public health laboratory in Aceh, the Indonesian province devastated by the disaster. The main task of the laboratory, employing mainly locally trained technicians, will be to watch for potential infectious disease outbreaks.

Pfizer expects the laboratory to become a permanent part of Indonesia’s health services even after the relief work has finished.
