Forced and child labour were not found in Cambodia when the International Labour Organization conducted its latest regular investigation into the country’s garment industry. ILO investigators also found no evidence of discrimination, though there were several sexual harassment incidents in one factory.
Conditions for worker representation are improving and one group of employees organized a strike in conformity with the law, the ILO reported.
The correct payment of wages was found to be a continuing problem in a number of factories but the biggest worry to the ILO was health and safety. The investigators said that in some workplaces protective equipment was lacking, machine safety guards were not being installed, ventilation and cleanliness were substandard and safety training was neglected.
