The apparel and footwear sector is to have its own supplement to the Global Reporting Initiative guidelines on sustainability reporting.
A ‘multi-stakeholder working group’ convened by the GRI will draft the supplement. The 20-strong group will meet for the first time this month and three more times before June 2006, when the supplement will be released for companies to trial. Public consultation is likely to take place early next year.
The supplement will include sector-specific performance indicators and commentary on applying the guidelines for all companies that produce and sell clothes and footwear.
In a separate development, three European consultancies have been appointed to revise the Global Reporting Initiative’s general guidelines on sustainability reporting.
Working in conjunction with the GRI, Germany’s triple innova, Switzerland-based Just Solutions Network and the UK’s csrnetwork will produce a draft by October, and the revised guidelines will be ready next year.
