Members of a senior working group on product responsibility, marketing and supply chain management met for the first time in the UK last month to discuss what they hope to achieve.

The Marketplace Impact Taskforce, which is co-ordinated by Business in the Community, will develop principles of good practice for marketing, product responsibility and ethical supply chain monitoring, based on ‘management processes from companies that have actually made them work’, according to Bitc’s development director Mallen Baker.

The group will also act as a ‘pro-business, pro-responsibility voice’ in debates on issues of public concern such as obesity.

The chair of the task force, which will have up to 15 members, will be Mike Clasper, chief executive of the UK airport group BAA. Other confirmed participants include Dianne Thompson (chief executive, Camelot), Phil Hodkinson (chief executive of insurance services, HBOS), and Alastair Baker (UK managing director, Microsoft).

The task force is to produce a report in late March outlining what it hopes to achieve. It will publish guiding principles for responsible marketplace practices within three years, which is the expected lifespan of the group.
