Tobacco multinational Gallaher is extending its ethical supply-chain monitoring efforts by assessing the social impact of the companies that furnish it with non-tobacco inputs.
The new work by Gallaher, which is the seventh largest tobacco company by market capitalization, affects around 50 suppliers of packaging, filters and paper and other non-tobacco items who were recently sent a survey on their policies on human rights, community engagement and reporting procedures. Gallaher had earlier established that the suppliers – mostly based in the European Union – are relatively good at managing their environmental impact, with six in ten complying with recognized environmental management standards and all having set environmental improvement objectives.
Corporate affairs manager Jonathan Duce said: ‘Initially we’ve focused on our leaf suppliers, as it’s our core product and we have less control over it. We’re now beginning to work out where our suppliers of non-tobacco materials are on these issues.’ Gallaher will cover progress in its next CSR report.
