A small Welsh clothing company is using its mail order catalogue to present information on its approach to corporate social responsibility.

Howies has devoted several pages of its latest winter catalogue to providing information on its use of natural rather than man-made materials, recycling, work/life balance for its employees, and similar subjects.

The catalogue also contains sections on issues the company says it is concerned about, such as population growth, obesity and sports utility vehicles.

Howies, which employs fewer than 20 people at its head office in Cardigan and supplies dozens of outdoor lifestyle stores around the UK, says the catalogue is the cheapest and most effective way for a company of its size to report on CSR.

The 112-page catalogue even includes details of books on related subjects which the company library lends to customers. It says all but a handful are returned.

Howies gives one per cent of turnover or ten per cent of pre-tax profits – whichever is the greater – to environmental and social causes.
